Heavy Highland Athletics
I felt this needed a page unto itself. This is a hobby that we, along with all our friends, are passionate about. Fred has competed in Heavy athletics to some degree for almost 20 years, and I began competing after we were married, although I had been attending games for some time.
My getting "down and dirty" in competing was actually a fluke; There is supposed to be at least three women competing at a game to make it an "official" game score for rankings. At the 2004 Kentucky Scottish Weekend, they were short a few women, so I, along with three or four others, were drafted. (Thanks to Colleen Millar). Even though we girls had watched our boys compete from the sidelines and offer our encouragement and support for years, Colleen taught us the finer details of competing ourselves. From that moment, I was bitten with the bug. Fred and I began to train with a group in Northern Alabama where we were living while Fred was working in Huntsville for NASA and compete in earnest. I continued to compete until a car accident compromised my throwing shoulder in December 2004. Short lived, but oh so worth it! It is my intention to get back into it once my shoulder and arm recover, and my children are old enough not to need Mom holding their hand at the games.
